SCAGLIOLA
Scagliola is a centuries-old craft using a mix of gypsum, lime, and raw pigments to create a material that mimics the patterns and complexity of marble, earth, and stone inlay. American style scagliola (marezzo) is mainly used for architectural features such as columns and fireplace surrounds, while Italian scagliola is more nuanced and features marble-like veining to imitate stone.
The painterly style of scagliola uses the art form as a medium for painting that emphasizes color, form, and composition to allow more possibilities and artistic expression. Other techniques might create scagliola as an inlay to fill carved designs, or use sgraffito to add fine lines and delicate details. These richly patterned surfaces can elevate designs and transform everything from furniture and objects to walls and ornamental details.
Please inquire to learn how scagliola can be made in studio and shipped worldwide for installation by others, or made on site to be attached to the surrounding architecture.
