My creative philosophy regarding murals is to paint something that has its own identity and reflects my aesthetic sensibility, yet also exists in equal dialogue with everything around it: the architecture, color, and design of the space. I see my work as part of the larger puzzle assembled by the designer. —SuperStrata artisan David Faust

Murals change the atmosphere of the spaces they occupy, so it’s no surprise that David Faust’s scenic compositions create rooms that feel transportive and deeply calming.

The mural collaboration all starts with a maquette, hand drawn by David in the vision of the designer. It accounts for the elements that break up the walls such as door and window frames, and gives an initial view of the mural's flow throughout the room. This is especially important when the mural extends across multiple surfaces to create a panoramic view.

"When you’re painting a mural, you're working with a space, but you're also working within the space of the mural. It’s more dynamic horizontally and vertically, and there is the element of time as you're looking through it—you sort of move through the space and it changes as you move through the space, too." —SuperStrata artisan David Faust

Murals can also be painted on canvas and shipped to the site to be installed on a surface, versus painting the mural directly onto a wall.

Fine Art Paintings

In a different expression of the painted canvas, David’s fine art works evoke a quiet sense of serenity and reflective calm. Classically trained, he draws on a refined understanding of color and composition, using his eye for nature’s emotional depth to translate it into each painting.

David speaks of his inspiration behind these paintings, "When it’s twilight, either really early in the morning or after the sun sets, the landscape forms become simplified. There are big shapes and patterns, and the light playing with those elements creates forms that become almost abstract. There's a real dynamic between the positive and negative spaces, and these silhouettes and cloud forms create beautiful patterns that happen as the tide is changing and the rocks are being exposed."

Botanical Wallpaper Designs

Adjacent to these works of art are David's decorative stenciled wall designs and wallpapers. As he reflects, "While murals and paintings involve more gesture and perspective, a wallpaper or stenciled surface is a repeating pattern so it's almost like you're looking at an overall texture, more like a wall finish."

In collaboration with SuperStrata, David has been developing wallpaper designs that draw inspiration from his love of the natural world as well as the American Aesthetic Movement and Cape Cod Arts & Crafts style.
